Being a mom and a business owner is not an easy combination, however, there’s no reason why you can’t become a successful mompreneur.

1. CREATE A BUSINESS PLAN

Successful mompreneurs don’t leave anything to chance. They don’t constantly react to things, but they make things happen.

If you want to achieve your goals, you will need a plan and a roadmap. The easiest way to arrive at a destination is to know where you want to go and how you are going to get there.

Lots of mompreneurs are running their businesses like hobbies. They don’t have a plan or effective strategies to grow their business. No wonder many of them feel stuck and don’t have the results they desire.

While a business plan won’t guarantee your success, it shows you mean business.

So, what are some of the benefits of having a business plan?

  • You can map out the steps you need to take to grow your business.
  • Track the progress of your business
  • A business plan can keep you focused and motivated
  • It gives you clarity and provides structure for your business

These are just some of the benefits of having a business plan.

A business plan is also very effective in securing funding for your business. If you want to scale your business and need a loan, a business plan can increase your chances of getting one.

I know many mompreneurs think creating a business plan is very difficult or intimidating. It doesn’t have to be. You can create a one-page plan with only important information like how you will fund your business, your marketing strategy, and how you will generate revenue and profit.

If you don’t have a business plan, consider creating one for your business. You will have a better idea of which direction to take when you have a plan.

2. INVEST IN YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

If you want to become a successful mompreneur, you have to learn how to invest in yourself and in your business.

It’s hard to grow a business without making some important investments. While it is okay to use free resources and do some things for yourself, sooner or later, you will get to a stage where you need to make some investments to get to the next level.

If you are bootstrapping your business, or not making enough money just yet, you probably feel reluctant to spend more money, but you have to take some calculated risks if you want to grow your business.

Investing in yourself or your business doesn’t mean you have to buy everything that is recommended to you or everything that crosses your path. Doing that is a sure path to going broke. And, let’s be real. You probably won’t read or finish a lot of books or courses you purchase.

So, how do you go about making essential purchases or smart investments?

  • Start with the most essential things. That means the tools or resources you need to run your business.
  • Identify some skills or business knowledge that you lack, and invest in resources that will teach you those skills or teach you what you need to know.
  • Focus on right now. What do you need right now? For instance, if you want to learn how to market your business, your investments should be related to that. Don’t invest in a course about product creation. Focusing on one thing at a time, will make your budget more manageable and your learning more productive.
  • Buy only what you need. This one can be hard because we are always scared of missing out on a deal or something. But a deal is not a deal if you don’t need it.

Investing in yourself will take you a long way. If you feel stuck in your business, consider making some investments to help you get unstuck. Perhaps, a course or a coach who can work with you one-on-one.

3. IMPROVE YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS IF YOU WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL MOMPRENEUR

The only way to find a happy balance between work and family life is to learn how to manage your time.

If we are being honest, most of us have more than enough time to do what we need or want to do. The problem is that we misuse our time, so we end up with a never-ending to-do list, and feel frustrated because we are not getting things done.

If you can improve your time-management skills, you will be surprised how much you can actually accomplish while juggling your business and family life.

If you can minimize distractions, stop procrastinating, and get organized, you can find a happy balance between your business and your personal life.

Another thing you can do to help you manage your time is to have a regular schedule that you follow. You can break up your time into blocks. One block for working on your business, another for family time, and so on.

Creating and sticking to a schedule is a great way to keep everyone happy. It’s also a great way to stay consistent in your business.

If you are struggling to achieve your business goals, take an honest look at how you manage your time. Are you doing the best that you can with the time you have or are you wasting a lot of time?

4. BE CONSISTENT

Consistency is one of those things we all agree is necessary for growing a business, but it is also one of the hardest things to do (especially in the early stages when you are not getting your desired outcome).

I have had moments when I wanted to throw in the towel because it felt like no matter what I did or tried, I kept hitting brick walls. I am sure some of you can relate to that.

It would have been easy (well not so easy) to walk away from it all but I didn’t. Instead, I buckled down and continued showing up.

Consistency is the only thing that can create the outcome that you want. Things may not happen when you want them to or in the way that you want them to, and that’s okay.

Keep taking one step after the other, and one day you will wake up to the outcome you desire.

I feel like I should add that this only works if you are doing the right things. Doubling down on the wrong or ineffective strategies won’t make a difference no matter how consistent you are. But, that’s a matter for another blog post.

So, if you are stuck or your business is stagnant, start by checking out your consistency. Do you take your business seriously or do you treat it like a hobby?

5. LEARN HOW TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS

How effective you are at marketing your business will determine whether or not you succeed as an entrepreneur.

One of the reasons many business owners struggle to grow their business is because they lack effective marketing strategies. This problem is not unique to mompreneurs, however, lots of mompreneurs are in this boat because they are bootstrapping their businesses and don’t have large marketing budgets.

It’s possible to still market your business effectively without a huge marketing budget. You just have to make smart decisions, take a few risks, and track your efforts to find out what is working.

There are lots of marketing strategies to choose from, so finding the right one may take some time. When you think of marketing strategies, think of the best way to reach your potential customers.

Different customers respond to different things, so it’s your job to find out what your customers respond to, so you can reach them where they are.

You can’t grow your business if you can’t attract customers and sales. So, if you struggle in this area, you have to make it a priority. You can learn about marketing if you put your mind to it.

No, you don’t have to be slimy or deceptive. You can market your business ethically (and you should).

6. DEVELOP YOUR MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS

As a mompreneur and small business owner, you are both the manager and leader of your business. In other words, the success or failure of your business depends on you.

I don’t know about you, but that’s a big responsibility and it is enough to stress someone out! Thankfully, it is possible to develop leadership and management skills so there’s no need to freak out.

As a mompreneur, you are responsible for making most if not all the decisions for your business, which means your decision-making ability should be top-notch. Also, you are responsible for managing your business, keeping track of what is going on, managing your business resources and so many other things.

As you can see, it is a huge responsibility, so it’s important to know what you are doing and to learn everything you can about entrepreneurship.

Lots of businesses fail as a result of bad financial management and poor leadership and management skills. It’s not enough to have a good business idea. You have to execute that idea and keep your business running smoothly.

In case you are wondering what some of your responsibilities are as a manager and leader, here is a small list for you.

  • Setting business goals
  • Planning and executng your business strategies
  • Managing your business finances including creating a budget
  • Tracking your business
  • Creating /developing and delivering products to customers
  • Coming up with new product ideas
  • Keeping your customers happy

This list is a small sample of your responsibility as a mompreneur. Of course, you can always outsource some of these tasks, but ultimately, you are responsible for your business.

7. DEVELOP CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF

If you want to be a successful mompreneur, you will have to develop confidence.

You will struggle to grow your business if you are in the habit of second-guessing yourself. It is important to believe in yourself if you want to make the right decisions for your business.

Self-confidence comes from knowing your strengths and your weaknesses. When you know your limitations, you know where you need help, so it is easy to get the help that you need.

Don’t let self-doubt hold you back or slow your progress.

Now, we all have doubts because you can never really predict the future. That’s not the kind of doubt that I am talking about. I am talking about self-doubt that paralyzes you or stops you from taking action.

I know a few people who refused to start their businesses because they just can’t get past their fear. They have a business idea, spent years reading about how to start their business, but they refuse to take the first step because they are afraid of failing.

If you don’t go after your dream because you are afraid of failing, you may look back years later and feel some regret. A willingness to fail is part of what makes a successful mompreneur.

You must be willing to put yourself out there and take risks. If you are not willing to take risks, you will limit yourself and your business.
